After working on copying the Mona Lisa, I have a new found appreciation of older, more classic paintings. That said, I have loved this painting since childhood, despite it being very different to the usual calm pieces I enjoy.
As with so many paintings I personally love, it has a great sense of light which gives it a big impact. Now I revisit it I also see how its composition draws the viewer to the face of Liberty, the clouds behind her highlighting her face, and then onto the boy beside her.
Realism and depth are also things that appeal to me, hence the work I have done to improve my technical ability, and this painting is the kind of work which fuels this desire.
