Sometimes the obvious isn't the best way to go, but in this instance I'm running with it. Several people have described my work as cinematic, so as I usually work on 4x3ft canvas, I thought I'd take that 4:3 format and turn it into a 70mm film format as an obvious extension from my photographic and cinematic style.
Many of us became very used to those black borders before widescreen TVs came into play, and despite reducing the actual area of the image, I'm hoping it will make the picture feel more immersive.
I have used a reference for the boat shape, but the rest is currently imagined. This mix of real and created is my ideal way of working.
